Year-to-year growth in the smartphone market in 2005 exceeded 70 per cent and will continue to grow “robustly” for the next several years, with Linux and Microsoft emerging as the dominant platforms, In-Stat predicted today. However, the analyst firm warned that the risk remains of consumers perceiving these devices as just very expensive feature phones. In-Stat noted that a major problem affecting the appeal of smartphones is that many users do not download applications that make them more useful after they leave the store.

Mobile email on the verge of mass adoption

Mobile email is on the verge of mass adoption. A new report from the company claims that there are roughly 650 million corporate email inboxes worldwide today, at least 35 per cent of which could be mobilised. Datamonitor estimates the global addressable market for enterprise mobile email at around 260 million subscriptions, while global mobile operator revenues from mobile email and personal information management are expected to surpass $600m by 2009, over three times those of 2005.

A camera is considered by many users to be one of the most desirable features in wireless handsets, yet, evidence suggests that only a tiny percentage of camera phones are used regularly to transmit pictures or to store for later use, reports In-Stat. Less than a third of camera phone owners surveyed by In-Stat indicated that they share picture messages with friends, the high-tech market research firm said.

Microsoft security service to ship in June

Microsoft plans to ship a new security product in June, charging $49.95 a year to shield up to three PCs against viruses, spyware and other cyberthreats, the company said on Tuesday. As previously reported, Windows OneCare Live’s June debut marks Microsoft’s long-anticipated entry into the consumer antivirus market. That space has long been the domain of specialized vendors, led by Symantec and McAfee. Microsoft announced its intent to offer antivirus products in June 2003 when it bought Romanian antivirus software developer GeCad Software.
