Scientists at IBM say they have figured out how to produce smaller and more powerful microchips than previously thought possible. It is hoped IBM’s announcement at San Jose on Monday will mean the creation of miniscule microprocessors which will save the IT manufacturing sector billions of dollars. The breakthrough revolves around the distance between the circuit-lines chip makers must ‘draw’ onto the surface of a computer processor. Valve’s reportedly confirmed that the second in its episodic series of Half-Life 2 expansion is already underway. Episode 2 “has been in development for some time” according to designer/engineer Robin Walker, speaking to CVG, although he declined to elaborate. It’s not entirely surprising of course - with Half-Life 2: Episode 1 (previously known as Aftermath) due out on April 24th, focus is likely to shift to future projects sooner - but it’s the surest sign yet the Episode 1 is genuinely nearing completion. |

Microsoft’s next desktop operating system will ship in eight flavors, according to a company leak. The eight flavors of Windows Vista will range from versions aimed at home and business tastes to two versions designed to comply with the European Commission’s (EC’s) ruling against the bundling of Media Player. The EC-friendly editions come as Microsoft continues to argue the toss over whether it has complied with the terms of the Commission’s anti-trust ruling in its bid to avoid paying a daily penalty of $2.4m for failure to comply. |

Thirty-eight percent more people suffer from sore wrists and thumbs due to texting than five years ago and 3.8 million people now complain of text-related injuries every year. |

The long time stalwart of the GSM mobile industry, the SIM card, is set to get an overhaul by European operator Orange and card-based solutions provider Oberthur Card Systems. This increase in storage space can be used to store not only text messages and phone numbers, but also media files, games, and applications. |

A new computer worm targeting Apple Computer Inc.’s Macintosh computers has been identified for the second time in one week, security experts said. The new worm, called OSX.Inqtana.A, spreads through a vulnerability in Apple’s OS X operating system via Bluetooth wireless connections, antivirus company Symantec said. “We have speculated that attackers would turn their attention to other platforms, and two back-to-back examples of malicious code targeting Macintosh OS X … illustrate this emerging trend,” said Vincent Weafer, senior director at Symantec Security Response. |
