Indistinct deathly murmurs abound about some movement on the next Resident Evil film. Russell Mulcahy of Highlander II infamy is apparently now attached to direct the third film, and it’s to be known as Resident Evil: Extinction, not RE: Afterlife, which was supposedly the name of the third script that seemingly outgoing director Paul W.S. Anderson had penned. Either way, people are still suggesting that events of the third will still dovetail into the already confirmed fourth script, which relocates the action to Japan. |

Fraunhofer Institute has developed prototype technology to help curb the sharp rise in online music piracy, which, ironically, has been enabled through another invention of the renowned German research group: MP3 audio compression. Researchers at the Fraunhofer Integrated Publication and Information Systems Institute have successfully tested a software system, based on the group’s own digital watermarking technology, for tracking pirated audio files in p-to-p (peer-to-peer) file-sharing networks, said Michael Kip, a spokesman for the institute. |

Yahoo Inc. provided evidence to Chinese authorities that led to the imprisonment of an Internet writer, lawyers and activists said on Thursday, the second such case involving the U.S. Internet giant. The latest storm over Western Internet companies in China comes just weeks after Web search giant Google Inc. came under fire for saying it would block politically sensitive terms on its new China site, bowing to conditions set by Beijing. |

Microsoft has moved to strengthen and broaden the intellectual property protections it offers those original equipment manufacturers and distributors across the globe that build and sell devices powered by its Windows Embedded and Windows Mobile software. The Redmond, Wash. based software maker will announce Feb. 9 that this strengthened IP protection now includes the defense of OEMs and distributors against IP claims in every country Microsoft distributes or markets its Windows Embedded and Windows Mobile products; protection of patent, copyright, trademark and trade secret claims based on that software; and the removal of the monetary cap related to defense costs. |
