Security intelligence outfit iDefense Labs is offering a $10,000 reward to any hacker who finds a worm hole in Microsoft’s products, but the software maker isn’t exactly thrilled by the gambit. One day after iDefense, of Reston, Va., announced the bounty as part of a newly implemented quarterly hacking challenge, a spokesperson for Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., said paying for flaws is not the best way to secure software products. “We do not believe that offering compensation for vulnerability information is the best way [researchers] can help protect customers,” the spokesperson said in a statement sent to eWEEK. “Microsoft believes that responsible disclosure, which involves making sure that an update is available from software vendors the same day the vulnerability is first broadly known, is the best way to protect the end user,” the statement said. |

Microsoft has made available the latest release of the Visual Studio 2005 software development kit. The latest release of the Visual Studio 2005 SDK, the February CTP, is now available for download from the Visual Studio Extensibility site, said Rob Caron, a content architect for Visual Studio Team System, in his blog. The February CTP release includes Microsoft’s DSL tools, known as the Domain-Specific Languages Extensibility Kit. |

Just a day after experts warned of what is believed to be the first Trojan in the wild to target Apple Computer’s Mac OS X, alerts are being published on a new worm that exploits an 8-month-old vulnerability in the operating system. The new Inqtana worm spreads through a security flaw in Apple’s Bluetooth software, antivirus vendors Symantec and F-Secure said on Friday. Apple provided a fix for the flaw last June with security update 2005-006. |
